THE NINE CHOIRS OF ANGELS

THE FIRST HIERARCHY

 

Definition: This group of three choirs, sometimes called counselors, stand before the throne of God.

Seraphim: stand before the face of God. Name means 'light, love.'

Cherubim: 'knowledge angels' pass on information to the angels beneath them.

Thrones: 'service angels' are the footstool of God.

THE SECOND HIERARCHY

Definition: This resplendent group is known as the rulers or governors, guiding the planets.

Dominations: represent God's power and carry out the commands of God.

Principalities: signifies 'leaders', ministering angels and protectors of rulers.

Powers: commissioned to remove obstacles which interfere with God's commands.

THE THIRD HIERARCHY

 

Definition: The messengers of God.

Virtues: Exercise power over the material world, presiding over the laws of nature, and maintaining order.

Archangels: Fulfill important missions to man and preside over the goverance of countries, cities, and dioceses.

Angels: watch over the spiritual and physical life of man and obtain his gifts from God.
